30th September marks the end of KKIFF 2023; specifically our CINEBALU Screenings! For the whole one week from 23rd till 30th September, we have screened 21 films; 14 short films and 7 feature films.

For the Closing Night on 30th September, Saturday, we are proud to end the festival with a Sabahan film titled ‘Maria‘ by Ryot Ujin who has been in the local filmmaking industry since 2006 having worked as a crew and actor in West Malaysia prior.

The movie centres around Maria’s childhood which turned dark when she loses her parents in a hit-and-run accident caused by a rich young couple. The trauma of the incident results to Maria holding a grudge against the rich. Reaching her teenage years, everything is beautiful with her lover, Randy, but their love is blocked by differences in social status. Maria’s old grudge resurfaces when Randy marries Serina, a beautiful young woman from a rich family.  Maria intends to get her lover back, even if her life is at stake.

‘Dog Eaters’ directed by Kevin Pison Piamonte.

‘Tak Bicara Bersuara’ directed by Rendro Aryo.

Prior to the screening of ‘Maria’, we will also be screening two short films; ‘Dog Eaters’ from the Philippines and ‘Tak Bicara Bersuara’ (Silent Talk) from Indonesia. There will also be a Q&A session with all the directors after their films as well as wine and cheese prior to the screening, so you do not want to miss that!!

You can purchase the closing night film tickets via our website or at the ticket counter in City Cineplex, City Mall Kota Kinabalu.

See you on Closing Night!
