The Kota Kinabalu International Film Festival (KKIFF) is proud to announce this year’s juries, mentors and lead trainer for our programmes and competition. Let’s get to know each of them!

SABAH FILM LAB

About the programme:

The Sabah Film Lab is an 8-day filmmaking course aimed at equipping participants with an intermediate filmmaking knowledge taught by prominent filmmaking mentors. At the end of the programme, participants are required to produce either a documentary or narrative film which is to be premiered during the KKIFF Awards Night on 1st September 2023. Our Mentors:

IMRI NASUTION, Director

Imri Nasution is a versatile filmmaker. His skills include cinematography, sound recording, editing, and even acting, but directing is his core strength. Imri has directed programs for networks such as CNBC, Fox Life, Asia Food Channel, Disney Channel, Viu Asia and also local stations from Astro, RTM and TV3. Recently, Imri was also Creative Advisor for the film, ‘Anwar: The Untold Story’.

Imri is involved in both fiction and documentary filmmaking. With a diploma in filmmaking, Imri has been directing documentaries, music videos, business programs and TV series since 1999. He is also a co-founder and director of Kino-i Pictures, a production company that plays a key role in nurturing talent by conducting certified training and workshops on new film techniques for young people.

 

EDWIN RAJ, Executive Producer

Edwin Raj is a Transmedia Creative with more than a decade of experience in the media business. In 2014, Edwin produced the short film “Kekasih” with filmmaker Diffan Sina Norman, screened at Sundance, SXSW & numerous other film festivals.

As Head of Content with the travel channel GOASEAN, he produced 20 original series, 250 episodes distributed to 53 countries worldwide, receiving 19 international awards during the first 2 years of operations. 2018 saw Edwin’s most creative projects to date – the Starlight drone show at Malaysia’s Nation- al Games (SUKMA) with INTEL, executive producing YUNA’s ‘Forevermore’ and Alif and Sona One’s ‘Pun Boleh’ fully animated music videos. Edwin designed the mascot and produced 4 Fingers Fried Chicken commercial out now worldwide.

 

ISAZALY MOHAMED ISA, Editor

Isazaly Isa strongly believes that digital technology is the next revolution in filmmaking. In 2003, Zalee was certified as Final Cut Pro Trainer by Apple South-Asia Pacific HQ, Hong Kong. He is endorsed as a Professional-Tier in “Editing” by the Content Creative Industry Guild of Malaysia (CCIG) and also a National Certified Film/Video Editor by Malaysia’s Ministry Of Human Resources.

He recently became a Certified Trainer for Blackmagicdesign. In 2017, Zalee’s team won the Jury Class Award for “Best Short Documentary” at Hollywood Film Festival. He was Producer and Editor for the US based company Future History Films Inc. In 2022, he was awarded “Best Editor” for ‘Spilt Gravy On Rice’ in the 32nd Malaysia Film Festival (FFM32).

 

TILL PASSOW, Director of Photography

Till Passow, born in Munich in 1968, studied film and television directing at the Babelsberg Film University. His gradua- tion project Mast Qalandar (The Ecstatic) was shown at 54 international film festivals and received twelve awards, including the Lola of the Cultural State Ministry of Germany and the Golden Gate Award of the IFF San Francisco.

His numerous short films produced as a creative producer have been shown at international festivals such as Sundance, Locarno, CPH:DOX, Palm Springs International ShortFest, have won the Vanguard Award at the San Francisco Shorts IFF and the Soapbox Award of the Odense IFF and have been nominated for the American Film Institute Docs Award and the International Documentary Award.

 

HATA TAKESHI, Editor

HataTakeshi (Film editor/Producer) began directing TV programs and film trailers professionally during his university years. Going freelance in 1999, his main work is film editor and producer for feature documentaries and trailers.

His filmography includes films by Sato Makoto such as “Hanako” (2001), “Memories of Agano” (2004), and “Out of Place: Memories of Edward Said” (2005); “Power and Terror” (2002) by John Junkerman; “And Life Goes On” (2004), “Chokora!” (2008), “Dryads in a Snow Valley” (2015) by Kobayashi Shigeru; “Minnano Gakko” (2014/editing support) by Manabe Toshinaga; “Trace of Breath” (2017) by Komori Haruka; “Sennan Asbestos Disaster” (2017), “Minamata Mandalara” (2021) by Hara Kazuo; “Of Love and Law” (2017), “My Love: Kinuko & Haruhei” (2021) by Toda Hikaru.

SABAH PITCHING TRAINING

About programme:

This is a platform for filmmakers from the ASEAN region, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong to launch new feature-length documentary film projects (40 mins plus). Participants learn how to pitch and then make a pitch to a jury in order to get funding to move on to the next stage in the making of their film.

Lead trainer:

MARK OVERETT, Producer & Lecturer

Mark is the Head of the Film & TV department, JMC Academy, Brisbane. He has written and/or produced several documentaries and factual series including “ABBA – Bang-A-Boo- merang” (ABC-TV) – at the time, the most successful documentary for the ABC. Mark’s first feature film was “Unfinished Sky” in 2006. This Aust/Dutch co-production premiered in Toronto and won 6 AFI Awards, 4 Inside Film Awards and 4 Critics’ Circle of Australia Awards. Other co-productions include Danish/Australian and Finnish/German/Aus- tralian movies, as well as work in New Zealand.

Mark co-created the “In the Dark with Julian Clary” TV format produced in 20+ countries – the most successful comedy game show of its time. Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Griffith University) and Diploma in Scriptwrit- ing (AFTRS). Mark has presented papers/ workshops at Australia’s Screen Forever Conference, Montreux Golden Rose Television Festival and the Kota Kinabalu International Film Festival. Mark was co-awarded SPAA Independent Film Producer of the Year in 2008.

GO10 FILMMAKERS’ COMPETITION

About competition:

A filmmaking competition opened to citizens and residents of ASEAN countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam), Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The competition has three categories, namely Documentary, Narrative, Indigenous Language.

Competition Juries:

HASSAN MUTHALIB

Hassan is a writer, a Malaysian film historian & a film critic. A pioneer animator & filmmaker who has been in the industry for almost 60 years, he has directed animated shorts & commercials, documentaries & Malaysia’s first animated feature film.

He has lectured part-time on film & animation in many prestigious universities in Malaysia and overseas. He has been on numerous film festival juries in Malaysia and internationally as well as curated animation and film segments in Singapore, Germany, Hungary and locally. This is his umpteenth year being on the jury for the KKIFF & is proud to see its influence & importance in the industry and especially in the promotion of young upcoming talents.

 

 

MUZZAMER RAHMAN

Graduated in 2013 with a degree from Faculty of Film, Theater and Animation, MARA University of Technology, Malaysia. He began his career as a writer for magazine, television and short film. In 2011, he received the Best Director Award in 8th Malaysian Student Film Festival with his debut short film, Rona Maya.

In 2012, he was selected to represent Malaysia in 1st FLY-ROK PROJECT ASEAN and ASIAN FILM ACADEMY 2013. Muzzamer is also curator and programmer at Pesta Filem KITA & Temasya Wayang Budiman. His debut feature Prebet Sapu screened in various film festivals and was selected as the Malaysian Submission for OSCARS 2022. Currently he is producing two debut feature films for two young filmmakers.
