Sheril A. Bustaman
DOCS+ – JKKN Auditorium – 6.00pm – 5 June – OPENING NIGHT

COME HELL OR HIGH WATER – Sheril A. Bustaman (Director) will be present to take Q&A after the movie.

In Sabah, we do not think that mixed marriages are very unusual – there are a lot of families here with both Muslims and Christians in them. This might not be so common in West Malaysia!

Sheril Bustaman’s short documentary film called Come Hell or High Water is a firsthand account of an interracial marriage in West Malaysia spanning 24 years. We see how TMA, a regular Malay man, and Sherine, a typical Chinese woman, retell the tale of how they met, fell in love, got married and worked out the rest of the details along the way. What we don’t learn in the film is that this couple is actually Sheril’s parents – and they will be present when we show Come Hell or High Water at the KKIFF 2015 on Friday, 5 June at 6.00pm as part of our Opening Night programme.

Sheril is a final year student in Monash University Malaysia pursuing a Bachelors degree in the School of Arts & Social Science. She began filmmaking under the Filmmaker-in-Residence program in 2012, and has made a short film and two documentaries since then. She was also a Production Manager for a local children’s TV show, and began 2015 as a Communications intern in PT Foundation. Other than that, Sheril sleeps, eats and goes for karaoke sessions with her friends – not necessarily in that order.

Come Hell or High Water has already been screened at:

  • A Slice of Malaysian Cinema – 8th February 2014
  • Visual Transformations: Documentaries of Change (Nasi Bungkus Cinema) – 26th May 2014
  • Malaysian Shorts – 26th June 2014 – where it won the Audience Choice Award.
