Entry #18: Earth Prison – Diyu
Director: Wong Swee Ling (Malaysia)
Synopsis: Earth prison- Diyu is a short video with a horror theme. This video is based on my own virtual hell that is inspired by ancient Chinese mythology. In this virtual hell, every human is taken after their death in the form of a soul to an underground place, to experience a series of punishments in order to realize their mistakes and wash away their demons. In my opinion, every human deserves punishment as all of them are sinful and only pain can make them change and be reborn.

To let viewers understand the purpose behind my film, I have included a story with images and sound. Also I have applied montage art in creating my images and video to make it different from other videos.

The story begins with a dead person, naked and in chains, being brought to a court which allows it to see its past when it was alive and all the crimes it has committed through the justice mirror above. Then it will need to go through a series of punishments to wash off its demons. It first meets a scary “beast”, a dragon, and is tortured. Then it is pulled down a cliff and loses its hands and legs as they are torn apart. It is also hurt the flying swords from the sky. Its body is seriously injured, and it is bleeding everywhere. Next, It drops down again into a hot lava area which is full with spikes mountains. It is scared and wishes someone can help it. At this moment, it is caught and hammered into the jungle by the giant beast’ in hell and flies into the jungle which is full of dangerous wild animals such as pigs and eagles. They eat humans as food as revenge on humans for treating them cruelly in the real world. An eagle flies down and catches it for food. It tears its skin apart and eats it. It loses its skin and is dumped on the ground. A fast horse and carriage come and crush him till blood splatters everywhere. It is severely injured, loses most of its body parts, and is left with only a skull, bones and a heart. As you can see, the heart is black. It symbolizes evil. Only evil has a black heart. In the last scene, its sins fly out and flow into the black hole, meaning it is being cleaned, and its demons are washed off and the black hole signifies that everything need to start over again.

I used “it” as my character is because I want to create no gender. No matter whether they are guys or girls, young ladies or young men, uncles or aunties, old men or old women, without any limitation of age, gender or background, one day, they will eventually go to hell. This is what I want to create.
