KKIFF 2014 – Calling Filmmakers

The 6th KK International Film Festival – KKIFF 2014 – will be held from 1-8 June 2014.  However, to give filmmakers plenty of time to prepare for it, now is the time to launch the filmmakers’ competition and to provide information about the different ways in which filmmakers can showcase their latest movies at the festival.

The SYNC10 Filmmakers’ Competition is open to filmmakers from the ASEAN region this year.  As this includes Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia, we are looking forward to some interesting entries.  The theme of the competition is:  SYNC and movies can be any length up to 10 minutes.

There are three categories in the filmmakers’ competition for the KKIFF 2014 and these are:  documentary, narrative and indigenous language.  More information is available on our website:  KKIFF.com.

There will be two awards made for each category and these are the Golden and Silver Kinabalu Awards, being offered for the first time at the KKIFF.  In addition to this, each first prize winner will take home RM1000.00.

Filmmakers from Sabah can also apply for the Sabah Film Academy which will run from 1-8 June.  This is an opportunity to work in a team to make a short documentary with the guidance of a group of experienced and well-known filmmakers.  As The Sabah Film Academy is being sponsored by the Goethe Institute, the Alliance Francaise and the American Embassy, the mentors come from Germany, France and the USA, as well as Malaysia.  Entry requirements and an application form are found on our website at KKIFF.com.  There are limited spaces available for this extraordinary learning opportunity so apply as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the KKIFF provides a platform for Malaysian filmmakers in general to screen their latest short movies in the Malaysian Short Film Showcase.  From the 21 submissions made last year, 6 were selected to be screened and they provided KK audiences with an interesting insight into what young, independent Malaysian filmmakers are doing.  The KKIFF 2014 is focussing on documentary-making so the entries this year should be documentaries.  Submission details are found at KKIFF.com.

A new addition to the KKIFF 2014 is DOCS+ which will give KK audiences another exciting opportunity – this time, to view feature-length and short films by filmmakers from the ASEAN region.  The KKIFF is inviting submissions of both documentaries and other genres of movies to create an exotic mix of topics and themes in this part of the film festival.

All entries and submissions for the KKIFF 2014 close on 30 April, 2014.  For further information about any of these KKIFF 2014 events, please go the website:  KKIFF.com.  You can also call Jude, the Festival Director, on 014 3514298 or Hazli, the Festival Manager, on 016 5522435.

The KKIFF is co-organised by SPArKS (Society of Performing Arts, Kota Kinabalu) and SEDIA, with FINAS as a partner.  The event is supported by the Goethe Institut Malaysia, the French Embassy, the Alliance Francaise, the Institut Francais, the Japan Foundation, the Embassies of Romania and Croatia and the Embassy of the United States of America.
