Presentation at Awards Night, KKIFF 2015
Press Release – Feb 16 2016
The KKIFF has had great success with the short films made at Sabah Film Academy in 2014 and 2015. ‘Living in the Drains’ (Marcel Simok, Director), made during the Sabah Film Academy in 2014, won first prize for the Best Short Film at the Freedom Film Fest 2015. ‘Rapuh/Fragile’ (Bebbra Mailin, Director), made at the SFA 2015, has been selected to be screened in Japan at the end of March this year. It was selected by the Visual Documentary Project, Centre for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University. Bebbra Mailin and Aaron Hiew will go to Japan for the screenings – all costs covered.
The Sabah Film Academy will take place this year from 10-17 July in KK. Participants need to be Malaysian and can apply in groups of three and choose whether they want to make a documentary film or a narrative. There will be a team of international and Malaysian mentors, including Charlotte Lim, Tommy Mansur, Jeff Yusof and David Yanez (Spain), Rick Minnich (USA/Germany) and Larry Johnson (USA). Online applications close on 13 May.
The KKIFF is also calling for applications for the Sabah Pitching Training & Awards. This is open to filmmakers from throughout South-East Asia and Korea and they need to submit an idea for a short or feature-length documentary film. The training will take place on 16-17 July and a panel will decide on the winners after listening to their pitches. The grants are for RM8000 (Best feature-length pitch), RM4000 (Best short film pitch) and RM8000 (Best Sabahan pitch). There is also a special grant from DMZ Docs in Korea of about RM3500, plus an invitation to pitch at DMZ Docs in September 2016.
For our Cinebalu programme, we are calling for submissions of short and feature-length films from Malaysian filmmakers and filmmakers throughout South-East Asia and Korea. These need to be submitted by 6 May so that we can select the movies to be screened during the KKIFF 2016 from 8-17 July. Movies will be screened at MBO, a major sponsor of the KKIFF 2016.
More information about all of these can be found on the KKIFF website: www.kkiff.com or if people have questions, they can call Jude – 014 3514298 or Hazli – 016 5522435
