Congratulations to the 10 participants selected for the Sabah Film Academy!

There will be two teams for this year’s Academy: Team ST and Team HB.

Team ST will be shooting a documentary about a stateless teenager. This project was put forward by Marcel Simok and his team consists of:

  5. Ezandro Sualin

Team HB will be putting together a documentary about the historical buildings in KK under their team leader, Janessa Wong. The full team comprises:

  1. Janessa Wong, Team Leader
  2. Au Yong Seok Wun
  3. Johnny Cheah Sin Chun
  4. Azahqual Osman
  5. Mohd Fikri Bin Rosle

Pre-production meetings will take place this month so that the teams will be prepared for 8 days of intensive work when the Sabah Film Academy starts on Sunday, 1 June.

Sabahans, if you are a scriptwriter, composer, lighting person, director, producer, actor, sign up for the Sabah Film Academy as soon as you can. From the beginning of April, the KKIFF will be opening the SFA to the whole of Malaysia.

Entry Requirements:

Eligibility – who can enter

  1. Sabahans over 18 years of age and excited about working in filmmaking
  2. Already has experience in directing, cinematography, editing, production design, sound or producing for at least one short film
  3. Can communicate in English (the official language of the Academy)

Needed for Application

  1. Upload a short film (highest resolution possible) that you have been involved in making to YouTube (creating an account is free)
  2. Fill in the Sabah Film Academy registration form HERE – including:
    (a)  the link to your YouTube upload, and
    (b)  an idea for a 10-minute documentary (up to 500 words) OR attach your document

Additional Information

  1. Participants will be provided with meals during the Academy.
  2. Team members will need to provide their own transport and accommodation while in KK.
  3. Equipment for shooting and editing the movies will be provided by the Sabah Film Academy.  However, team members can also use their own cameras, lighting and computers for editing if they want to.  This will be discussed at the pre-production meetings.

marcus-vetterMARCUS VETTER – Director and Dean of the Sabah Film Academy
Marcus Vetter (born 1967) graduated in Economics and Media Theory and Practice. Since 1994 he has been working as a TV editor, producer and director at ARD/SWR in Baden-Baden and Stuttgart. His films have received attention at national and international film festivals and won numerous prizes, among which are 3 Adolf Grimme Awards – the German Oscar. Among his portfolio of films and documentations are feature length films such as The Tunnel (1999), My Father The Turk (2006), Heart of Jenin (2008), Hunger (2009), Cinema of Jenin (2011) and The International Criminal Court (2012).


tan-teck-zeeTAN TECK ZEE – Director of Photography
Tan Teck Zee currently bases himself in Kuala Lumpur shooting commercials, music videos, feature films and does his own photography/art projects.  He has a passion for visuals and is always seeking for interesting scripts to translate into screen. This has led him to work on local Malaysian movies like Amir & Lokman Pergi Ke Laut, KL Zombi, The Beggar Hero etc.

He graduated from Scuola Internazionale di Cinema e Televisione (NUCT) in Rome, under the supervision of maestros like Giuseppe Lanci AIC, Maurizio Gennaro AIC, and Alexandro Ghiara SOC.

Teck  Zee is well trained in both film and digital. Armed with knowledge, know-how and a can-do attitude, he has made invaluable contributions in many collaborations with local and foreign productions.

He always believes in team work and listening to peoples’ suggestions. He enjoys getting involved in projects that will bring him to the next level in order to continue to learn and challenge himself.


jacques-cometsJACQUES COMETS – Editor
Jacques Comets has edited or produced 41 films since 1986, working with directors such as Bernard Stora, Raoul Peck, Christine Pascal, Djamshed Usmonov, Ramadan Suleiman, Pablo Aguero, Tsai Ming-liang, Tonie Marshall, Massoud Bakshi , and Dima El-Horr.  He has been involved in editing several feature films in Morocco, Palestine, Colombia, Lebanon and Vietnam.  Jacques has also been involved in seminars, workshops and juries in cinema schools and universities in Switzerland, Chile, Cuba, Tunisia, Albania and Iran.

He is head of the Editing Department at la Femis (École nationale supérieure des métiers de l’image et du son) which is the  French National Film School.  Based in Paris, the school offers courses balanced between artistic research, professional development and technical training.


miriam-cutlerMIRIAM CUTLER – Sound Design & Music
Emmy nominated composer, MIRIAM CUTLER has an extensive background scoring for independent film & TV projects.  Her passion for documentary film has led to a focus on non-fiction.  Her work includes Oscar nominated KINGSPOINT/HBO and POSTER GIRL/HBO, Emmy nominated ETHEL/HBO,VITO/HBO, THIN(HBO), DESERT OF FORBIDDEN ART/PBS, Emmy winner GHOSTS OF ABU GRAHIB/HBO), Bafta nominated LOST IN LA MANCHA/IFC, Sundance winners AMERICAN PROMISE(PBS), SCOUTS HONOR(PBS) and LICENSE TO KILL/PBS, and Peabody Award Winning THE CASTRO. Miriam co-produced and scored ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT/OWN and has served as Lab Advisor for the Sundance Institute Documentary Composers Lab,  on documentary juries for the Sundance FF, Independent Spirit Awards, IDA Awards, AFI FF. She has co-produced two Grammy-nominated live jazz albums on PolyGram/Verve for Joe Williams, and albums for Nina Simone, Shirley Horn, and Marlena Shaw as well as independently released albums of her own songs and soundtracks.  Miriam recently joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
