This film is an intimate study of the mutual dependence between a slovenly, careless mother and her lonely, insecure teenage daughter. Eighteen-year-old Faye is always on the edge because of her mother’s boyfriends. Her mother survives by running a hairdressing salon but is both bored and irreponsible. Since there are only the two of them, they are very close and are, at times, like friends or sisters, but to Faye, her carefree mother is also like a child she needs to watch out for and look after. Faye is also plagued by rumours about her and her mother. There is love alongside the hatred in their co-existence. Maybe precisely because of the difficult situation and the difficult relationship, the mother and daughter also find emotional support from each other. Sadly, Faye can’t do anything by endure reality and hope to escape her dull and depressing life. Shot entirely on location in Malakka.
Praised by renowned Iranian director, Abbas Kiarostami, as pure cinema.
