JAGAT / BRUTAL

Malaysian | 86 mins | 2015 | Drama
Director: Shanjhey Kumar Perumal

Synopsis and Director’s Comment:
Set in the early 1990’s, a critical period in Malaysian Indian history, the story subtly underlines the plight of the Malaysian Indian. Forsaken by the estate owners who had employed them for generations and systematically marginalized, they are forced to move to the cities and survive under harsh circumstances. Left out of the nation’s urbanization and development plans, many live in squatter settlements and work for minimum wages. The plot centers on a bright but mischievous 12-year old boy, Appoy, and his relationship with his father, Maniam, and his uncles, Bala (an ex drug addict) and Dorai aka Mexico (a local gangster).

JAGAT/ BRUTAL is an autofiction movie of my own self growing up in a squatter area post rubber estate dislocation. It is very important for me to document this particular era.

The Man Next Door (El Hombre De Al Lado)

Argentina | 109 mins | 2009 | Drama
Directors: Gaston Duprat, Mariano Cohn

Synopsis: A story that exposes a clash between neighbours, and how these neighbours deal with their differences. Leonardo is a rich and successful designer with a passion for architecture. On the other hand, Victor is a used car salesman who is rough around the edges. The conflict of the movie arises when Leonardo discovers that Victor is building a window on the dividing wall. Throughout the movie, the men argue back and forth about the window and the problem seems irresolvable. But is Victor in the wrong? Is he really a ‘neighbour from hell’? This is a fascinating drama about class, communication, and the limits of tolerance.
