Happy New Year from the KKIFF Team! We are excited about preparing for our 13th festival in September of this year. There are still so many unknowns – but this is for sure: we will be having a 13th KKIFF in 2022.

And we’d love you to take part in our CINEBALU Screenings! Do you live in South-East Asia? Have you made a new film since September 2020? Short or long? Funny or sad? A documentary or narrative, an animation or an experimental film? Then you can submit it to the KKIFF through FilmFreeway.

Submissions opened on 1 Jan 2022 and close on 1 May 2022.
Submission Guidelines
  1. Submissions can be made by citizens and residents of ASEAN countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam), Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
  2. The submission charge on FilmFreeway is US$8.00.
  3. All genres are eligible for submission.
  4. Shorts and feature-length films are eligible.
  5. Screeners/preview copies for both shorts and feature-length films can be submitted.
  6. Multiple submissions are welcome.
  7. The film can be in any language – but English subtitles are required.
  8. Submissions must have been completed on or after 17 September 2020.
  9. Copyright for all music and videos used must be owned by the filmmaker. By submitting your film to the KKIFF2022, you agree that the KKIFF2022 will not be held liable for any copyright infringements perpetrated by you or your film.
  10. KKIFF reserves the right to use stills and/or short clips of films submitted to CINEBALU for the purposes of marketing and promotion.
  11. Submissions must be received on or before: 1 May 2022.
  12. Festival screening format is dcp, bluray or dvd.

Curating the Programme & Screenings
  1. Curating CINEBALU will take place in May-June, 2022 and those whose films are selected for screening will be informed on the KKIFF website and by email as soon as possible after this.
  2. All movies selected for CINEBALU screenings in a cinema will be submitted to the Malaysian Censorship Board.
  3. Screenings of the CINEBALU programme:

    Dates: 17-24 September, 2022
    Times: 7.00pm and 9.15pm
    Venue: TBC

Directors/Producers/Actors Welcome to attend their screenings

The KKIFF will make every attempt to set up Q&A with directors after screenings of movies from around South-East Asia.

Note:

  1. Dvds / pendrives will not be returned. Postage, insurance and any other costs incurred are the responsibility of the filmmaker submitting the dvd / pendrive. The KKIFF is not responsible for any dvds / pendrives or other materials that go missing.
